Sulzer in Brazil successfully delivers 55 pumps on time

Despite very tough competition, Sulzer in Brazil secured and successfully delivered an order of 55 pumps to Siemens.

Despite the economic and political crises that Brazil has been facing over the last two years, Sulzer Brasil (SBR) has managed to get some important pump orders — both via Intergroup and the regional third-party market Mercosur (Mercado Común del Sur). In the last year, activities in the oil and gas market segment in Brazil have been very weak, and Sulzer has worked hard to compensate with orders received from the engineered water and power market segments. The main challenges from the bidding phase up to the delivery of the orders were the short delivery times and the cost reductions demanded by the current market.

In August 2016, Sulzer Pumps Germany (SPDE) was invited by Siemens Austria to participate in the bid to supply boiler feed water pumps for the Ende Andina project. This project consisted of expanding the energy generation capability by transforming three thermal plants in Bolivia (Entre Rios, De Warnes and Del Sur) into combined-cycle plants. At the end of the project, the goal was to increase the power generation capability to 1’000 MW (Entre Rios 360 MW, De Warnes 320 MW and Del Sur 320 MW).

This bid proved to be very challenging from the beginning with an aggressive pricing target. A special workforce was set up to secure this order, involving many functions within Sulzer. During the final negotiation, SBR was requested to go through a factory qualification process carried out by Siemens. After various negotiation rounds, as well as great cooperation and teamwork between SPDE and SBR, Sulzer was able to win the order to manufacture the pumps.

SBR designed, manufactured, tested and delivered 55 pumps for this order within the contractual delivery time. The order was composed of 33 MC 80-260/13 and 22 MB 50-180/6 pumps, and the delivery time was split over five different dates.

Multistage ring section pump

Our procurement teams developed a plan to import most components from India, along with parts manufactured in Brazil.

During the final stage of the engineering activities, Order Related Engineering (ORE) organized a complete design review together with the production areas (pump assembly, test and service / RES) to eliminate possible errors during the manufacturing process. This was essential since the pumps will be installed in remote locations in Bolivia where there is no service center close to the plants to deliver fast intervention.

The contract also stipulated penalties in case of a delay in documents submission. However, thanks to the teamwork between PM, procurement, ORE and the vendors (mechanical seals, couplings and electric motors) the project progressed without any major hitches or penalties.

The biggest challenge of the project was to assemble all the components and buyouts within the planned timeframe in order to comply with the agreed delivery times. All 55 pumps were assembled and tested in the test-bed to comply with the customer requirement and to avoid any possible hydraulic or mechanical issues on-site. The hydraulic requirement was very tight but thanks to the good component quality brought from Sulzer Pumps India (SPI), all pumps were successfully tested and approved.

As an added bonus, all pumps were delivered on time, and the last package foreseen for February 2018 was released in December 2017 — two months early. This will help to increase the customer’s (Siemens) confidence in us for future projects.

In February 2018, Sulzer Brasil won three more Siemens projects for thermal plants in Argentina
